Joined Marines in 1967 and served tour
in Nam just in time for the Tet offensive. Needless to say this somewhat
discouraged me on a carear in the Marines so I got out. Enlisted again
in the Navy and ended up on a salvage ship USS. Conserver ARS-39 in Pearl
Harbor as a OS. After four very nice years in Hawaii I changed rates (to
LI) and went to SHAPE Belgium. Then to the USS Guam LPH-9 and was onboard
for Beruit, Lebanon duty and the invasion of Grenada. Two years at Navy
Nucular Power School in Orlando and then to the USS Raleigh LPD-1. This
fine vessel took me to the Persian gulf twice, the last time for desert
storm. Desert Storm was alot better than Viet-nam but wars get harder to
take the older you get. Retired in 1994 after duty at Cinclant Printing
Plant, Norfolk and went home to Indiana. I hav'nt seen the the ocean since.
(Or stood a mid-watch come to think of it). But it was a good ride and
rather exciteing at times. I'am glad I did'nt take that job with Po! st
Office after high school-the one that had a future and was safe.
