I joined the Navy in June 1974
went through boot at Great Lakes IL.
Co 202 16th Batalon, graduated
Sept. 74 I then served aboard the
USS NEW ORLEANS (LPH-11) from
Oct. 74 through Nov. 78 then went to the Naval
Reserves from Dec. 78 through
July 80. I then got out to spend about a year
with my wife and three children
to have some quality time with family. So
around Dec. 80 / Jan. 81 me
and my family agreed on me going back in the Navy.
Well to find out they was not
taking former sailors at that time. So I joined
the Oklahoma National Guard
and been in serval units throught my 16 years with
the guard where I retied as
a Sergant E-5. If I knew before hand and I could
have if I had some guidence
from family, friends and fellow shipmates that
I would have stayed in and retired
from the Navy. I had great times with the
Navy and National guard but
over all I had the best times while I was in the
Navy. I still live for the Navy
because my Heart is with all of my shipmates
before me, presant and future
shipmates. My three children (Robert,
Joseph 3rd & Cathleen) and
a step daughter (Sumaya Rodriguze) that is
in the Navy at this time, I
have a daughter in-law (Amy) that was in the Navy
and also had a brother (Frank)
that was in the Navy also. So I guess you could
call us a true Navy family.
For you young people and present
sailors go with and stay with the Navy and
don't make the same misstake
that I did by getting out because you will
forever regret it and this is
the honoist truth. The Navy is the best job
that you will ever find out
there in this dog eat dog world.
Oh! before I go, while surfing
on the Navy's web page and alike I found
a ship that bares our last name,
if anyone has any info on her, please
by all means contact me. She
is the USS DUTTON (AGS-22) surveying vessel
She joined the Naval Active
Fleet in Nov. 01,1958 and joined the
Naval Reserves Fleet in Nov.
12,1993. Some of the items would like to get
is coffy cup, picture, hat,
lighter, ships flag, ships patch. I will Try
and get her bell as soon as
I can find her where she is actualy berthed at.
FAIR WINDS AND FOLLOWING/CALM
SEAS/BRAVO-ZULU.
My brother Franklin Eugene Dutton
aka Curly joined the Navy on 28 Mar
1958 in Enid, Oklahoma and went
to boot camp at the San Diego Naval
Recruit Training Command then
went to NAAS Kingsville on or about 13 Jun
1958 then he went to the USS
Providence (CLG-6) on o about Il Sept 2959
and the ships home port was
in Long Beach, Ca. Then he went to the Naval
Reserves at the Long Beach,
Ca. Naval station on or about 26 Jan 1962 to
on or about 27 Mar 1964.
If any one has any information
about my brother, pictures, boot camp
graduation book and a cruise
book of the USS Providence (CLG-6) 1960 -
1961 West Pac Cruise. Please
by all means contact me at Itnl
