I joined out of HS in Jan 1970 - I went to Orlando, Fl Co 14 I went to
Pensacola A School "R" branch CT - CTR - I finished in Sept 1970 and was
sent to LinKou Taiwan. While there I went TAD to San Miguel Naval
Communication Station, Philippines - April - July (back to Taiwan leaving
Jan 1971) - I then went to "C" school specializing in High Frequency Direction
Finding (HFDF). That was in Pensacola. This was a 6 week class.
From there I went to Northwest Naval Communication Station, Va - That would
be in March 1972. While at Northwest, I was attached to the Direct
Support Division (to the fleet). I went TAD on the USS MT Whitney
(LCC-20), USS Calcaterra (DER-390), and USS Thomas J Gary (DER-326).
I would have to research those dates. I was Released from active
duty on January 18, 1974 and got my Honorable Discharge January 18, 1976.
CT was Communication Technician when I was in but was changed to Cryptographic
Technician after I got out. "R" was for Collection (don't ask how
that came about as I have no clue. I was going to ship over but the
circumstances sorta talked me out of it. In 1974 Viet Nam was winding
down and it was next to impossible to get advanced - I got out as a CTR3.
The shift that I was on was all CTR2's and some of them took a while to
get to 2nd class. I also found out that my next duty station was
going to be Karamürsel Turkey. I crossed the Arctic Circle and
became a Blue Nose. Overall, I really enjoyed my time in the
Navy and salute all of you that retired. I ended up being a Computer
Programmer and retired (disabled) 3 years ago,
I was at ShuLinKou (Navy) Sept 1970 - Jan 1972 with a TAD to the P.I.
from May - Aug of 1971 (so I did not have a full tour). My nickname was
Radar. I am currently in Knoxville, Tn - glenisnelson@hotmail.com or 865-985-8346
if you want to contact me. It was a very good tour, although I would say
the P.I. was a little wilder. They said there was a pool on base but I
was always trying to get to the bus (lol) to go downtown. I don't remember
why (lol)
