I JOIN THE NAVY IN JUNE OF 1969 OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL. I ENTERED BOOT
CAMP AT SAN DIEGO, CA AND AFTER BOOT CAMP WAS ASSIGNED TO THE USS MAUNA
KEA (AE-22) AS A FIRE CONTROL STRIKER, FIRST ARRIVING BY WAY OF PI, DANANG,
VIETNAM AND A TAXI RIDE OVERNIGHT ON THIS BIRDFARM CALLED THE USS HANCOCK,
BUT THEY WERE FULL SO I STARTED NAVY LIFE AS A FIRST DIVISION SA. ON THE
WAY BACK TO OUR HOME POST OF PORT CHICAGO/CONCORD NAVAL WEAPONS STATION
IN CALIFORNIA WE WENT ON A MERCY MISSION TO SAVE THE SS. COLUMBIA FLOUNDERING
IN TYPHOON JUNE. WE GOT THE WORST OF IT AND WOUND UP AT MARE ISLAND SHIPYARDS
FOR
REPAIRS. I SERVE TWO CRUISES ON THE MAUNA KEA WITH SIDE TRIPS TO
HONG KONG TWICE AND HAWAII. VIETNAM WAS OUR USUAL BUSINESS DAY UNREPING
WITH THE VARIOUS BIRDFARMS AND BATTLESHIPS,FRIGATES AND DD'S. WE ALSO INREPED
WITH A COUPLE COAST GUARD CUTTERS. DURING THESE UNREPS I WAS EPLENSHMENT
SIGNALMAN. I TRANSFERRED TO THE USS AJAX (AR-6) HOMEPORTED IN SAN DIEGO,
CA AND SPENT SIX MONTS! ON HER AND WE STARTED A CRUISE TO SASABO,
JAPAN. I LEFT THE AJAX BECAUSE I RECEIVED ORDERS TO NAVTRA SAN DIEGO FOR
RADIOMAN A SCHOOL. AFTER RADIO SCHOOL I WAS SENT TO NAVCOMSTA FINAGAYAN
GUAM. I WAS ASSIGNED THE RECEIVER SITE SHIFT WORKER AND AFTER A WHILE ECAME
THE FILES AND PUB CLERK. AS A PETTY OFFICER AND WORKER MY DUTIES
ALSO CALLED FOR ME ON OCCASIONAL BASIS TO BE THE DUTY DRIVER. IN MAY OF
1973 I WAS HONORABLY DISCHARGED FROM THE NAVY. IN 1982 I JOINED THE NAVAL
RESERVES IN SALT LAKE CITY AND TELCOM 120. TELCOM LATER BECAME
