Enlisted 1/4/1960 Boot camp Bainbridge MD. Received Education
Award. Radioman school Bainbridge MD. Stationed at Naval Air Station
Brunswick ME 3 yrs 5 days. Ground/Air CW operator. Crypto. (One day a squadron
guy told me "it was nice working with you." I replied, "what do you mean?".
He replied "we all know when you are on a circuit by the way you send.
We transfer our frequencies to yours.") Watch supervisor. Transferred to
NavCommsta Sfran 9/1964. Was not as lucky working CW. Guys on ships really
got ticked off at me because I could not keep up with their speed keys.
One day in the code room was enough. I also supervised the on-line security
area. Helped prepare news to the fleet that President Kennedy was killed.
Later transferred to Twelfth Naval District. Honorably discharged 12/1964.
Loved every minute. Hated the snow in Maine winters. Loved sunny California.
Loved my rate. Navy was a great experience. It provided me with life skills
I'm still using.
